The Contemporary Series

In the world of music, the term “contemporary” is sometimes used in a misleading way, since concerts featuring “contemporary music” also include works that were composed more than a hundred years ago.

If one therefore broadens the constitutive parameters, “contemporary music” encompasses the entire artistic production of composers who, since the beginning of the 20th century, have taken up Arnold Schoenberg’s revolutionary message — namely, the freedom of expression and of language — and who still today credit the Viennese School with having proclaimed the beginning of a new era: the will to overcome the tonal system that, since the 17th century, has formed the foundation of all Western music.

Of decisive importance for the development of new musical languages after the Second World War were the International Summer Courses for New Music in Darmstadt, which decisively transformed the musical language of the 20th century. Under the influence of Anton Webern, another protagonist of the Viennese School, new compositional techniques developed: a generation of young European and American composers created extraordinary works of serial, aleatoric, concrete, and electroacoustic music, to mention only a few compositional approaches. At the same time, they conducted important research into non-European musical cultures — Oriental, African, and North American — thereby fundamentally renewing the structural rules of composition, sound production, and even the semiotics of notation.

Against this background, the Contemporary series of Pizzicato Verlag Helvetia has set itself the goal of publishing works by composers who have contributed concretely to the creation, definition, development, and evolution of the music of the 20th century. In addition, it includes the works of the most recent generation of composers, who are currently shaping the musical avant-garde of the 21st century: their gaze is directed toward the future, in accordance with the uncompromising radicalism in the search for new means of expression pursued by the preceding generations.
